Nick is the keeper of memories but when a woman comes into his shop wanting to have her memories scanned to find her keys her memory sends Nick on an adventure.
Hugh Jackman plays Nick, a man that was once a war vet but now helps people remember things. When Mae, Rebecca Ferguson, walks into his shop his world gets turned upside down. After a few months of falling in love with Mae, she goes missing and Nick must use the memories of the people around him to find out what truly happened to her.
This might be Jackman’s best role yet. He’s know for being a very good actor but there is something about Nick that he plays so well. His emotions become your emotions as you travel around a Miami that’s underwater and New Orleans. Jackman plays the war vet that investigates memories with such a darkness that keeps you intrigued while you try to unravel what’s really going on.
Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence tells the story of how our memories can hurt us even when they are good. Joy worked as a producer on Westworld and you can see elements of that in this movie. It’s not a sci-fi movie but it does take place in a dystopian future where most of the world is underwater. Reminds me of Fall Out 4 if Fall Out took place in Waterworld.
Ferguson is also fantastic. As Mae you don’t really know what to expect from her. Is she a good person? Is she a bad person? As you go through the memories of the people around her you realize everyone has a good and bad side. She gets caught up in a world that she might not have wanted to be in but she’s doing her best to escape.
Overall, Reminiscence is a movie that not many people will appreciate. You really need to focus on what’s going on and there are times when it lags a little but the story is beautiful. The visuals are stunning and you really feel a part of the scenery. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it is a very good movie will most movies are not as original.
