A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away a group of rebels set out to get the plans for the Death Star so they could destroy it. It was hinted to in Star Wars IV: A New Hope that this group of rebels is responsible for Luke and the other pilots being able to destroy the Death Star. But the story is more tragic and beautiful than you could have imagined.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is about Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, trying to get to her father so he can give her the plans for the death star. When she was younger her father was taken to go back to work on a weapon for Imperial Empire. She escaped and is taken in by Saw Gerrera, an extremist who is against the Empire.
When we first see adult Jyn she is in a prison cell and being transported somewhere. The vehicle she is traveling in is ambushed and Cassian Andor, Diego Luna, takes her to the rebels. They know who she is and they want her to take them to Saw Gerrera. Gerrera, Forest Whitaker, has his own problem to deal with. A pilot for the Empire is captured and brought to Saw with information.
The information sets Jyn and Cassian on a whirlwind adventure to find and transmit the plans for the Death Star. Jyn’s father is the one who put the weakness in the reactor and wanted the rebels to find it. What the rebels had to do to get the plans is intense.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story feels like the classic movies. It is action packed and beautiful to watch. The script is fantastic and K-2SO, played by the underrated Alan Tudyk, is sarcastic and fantastic. Star Wars isn’t complete without a sassy android. Unpopular opinion time: this movie is better than The Force Awakens.
The best part was getting to see a story play out that we have only heard about. If you don’t consume any of the extra media, like the novels and cartoons, then you may be in the dark about how the rebels stole the plans. It was nice to see how it happened and with a great script and director to helm it. This story could have easily flopped if it wasn’t for director Gareth Edwards, which is surprising since his most notable movie is the 2014 Godzilla remake. In order to tell a Star Wars story correctly you need a great script and director and Rogue One has it.
If you are a lover of Star Wars then this movie is sure to please. It is one of the best Star Wars films in the franchise and it seems like Star Wars is back on top. We may not be able to forget the prequels but The Force Awakens and Rogue One prove that we can have great Star Wars films.
