M3GAN: Movie Review

After Katie's parents die, her aunt designs a new friend for her. But M3GAN has more in mind than just being friends.
M3GAN starts out with a very lighthearted and satirical tone, a commercial for a new toy. Similar to a Furby but way more annoying and linked to technology. This sets the stage for how the movie will go, a very lighthearted, satirical look at how technology is raising our kids.
But sometimes it's too much. James Wan tends to get that way when he makes movies. In the beginning, the amount of horror and satire is nice but by the end, you are no longer scared, not laughing, and wishing the movie would end.
While this script wasn't written by Wan, it was written by Akela Cooper who also wrote Malignant, it was his original story that became the script. Wan does come up with really creative horror ideas but somewhere the execution falls short.
Just like Malignant, M3GAN is a messy but sometimes fun movie. It's what a friend refers to as a "popcorn movie", the kind of movie where you watch it in a theater with a big tub of popcorn and never think about it again. There is nothing that sets this movie apart from recent horror movies. It's hard to even call it a horror movie.
Fans of James Wan will, of course, love this movie but to someone that was looking for more Ex Machina and less camp, this one disappointed.
