The Crain family lived in a haunted house. You know this because Steven Crain wrote a book about it. Even after moving away from the home after their mother's suicide, the house continues to haunt them today.
Hugh and his wife Olivia are remodeling an old home referred to as Hill House. They plan on selling it for big money to build their forever home. Little did they know Hill House would become one of the most haunted homes in America.
At first things are fine. The kids explore the home and find new and exciting things, including a red door that can not be opened. Sometimes the kids will wake up to ghosts wondering around the home. Other times they are startled in the dark by something crawling toward them...you know, the usual haunting stuff.
After their mother's suicide their family moves out and the kids are sent to live with their aunt. Now they are grown with their own set of problems. Luke is a drug addict and has been in and out of rehab. Shirley has a beautiful family and a great business but her husband might be hiding something. Theo doesn't like to get too close to people and she especially doesn't like to touch them. Nell has had a life of heartache and Steven has made millions exploiting his family.
What's great about The Haunting of Hill House is that the scares are not the scariest part of the story. Yes, the bent-neck lady is very creepy but the psychological part is what gets you. You lay awake at night after a binge thinking about all the ghosts and dissecting the story. There are so many twists and turns and it takes a second to realize "oh, that's what's happening".
The Haunting of Hill House is one of the best shows Netflix has put out. The effects are amazing and the acting really sells the story. All of the child actors are great. The ghosts are not cheesy either, I'm looking at you Crimson Peak. It really sells the creepy factor without being too scary that you need to shut it off after a few episodes. Watch this one in the dark for maximum spook factor! If you are looking for something to binge this Halloween weekend I would strongly recommend The Haunting of Hill House.
