Imagine living in a world where no one knew who The Beatles were and had never heard any of their songs. Now imagine you are a struggling musician and you happen to be the only one who remembers them. What would you do and how would it change your life?

Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel, wakes up after a strange incident to find that the world no longer remembers The Beatles and a handful of other things. After struggling for 10 years to break into the music business he decides to start singing famous Beatles songs at catches the attention of Ed Sheeran and the world.

One of the best things about Yesterday is that it reminds you how different the world would be if something so small changed. There wasn’t a huge difference in life after people forget The Beatles but seeing people light up when they hear one of their songs played my Malik reminds you that music is universal and The Beatles are the best group in the world for a reason.

The acting in Yesterday is phenomenal. Patel really looks lost most of the time in this new fame and the new world he is living in. You can feel his passion for the music. Lily James, who plays his manager/love interest, also does really well. The standout, for me at least, was Rocky, Jack’s friend and roadie, who becomes a very loveable character by the end.

Yesterday’s plot seems like it shouldn’t work, like it would hokey or silly but it works and it works well. There is one surprise in the movie that will take your breath away and the ending is not what you would expect. Yesterday is one of those rare movies that come along and just make you feel good, warm and happy by the end.
