I think most people grew up with the book series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. It was books filled with creepy, scary, and sometimes funny stories that kids were in love with. First published in 1981, and later re-released in 2011, the books were loved but caused quite a stir.
Translating a collection of stories to a cohesive movie seemed almost impossible but with a writer like Guillermo del Toro Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark not only brings the scares but also brings to life a well written story about loss and the supernatural.
Set in the fall of 1968, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark centers around a group of friends that venture to a supposed haunted house on Halloween. The legend says that Sarah Bellows was left alone all her life, locked away from the world. She killed some kids and now the house is haunted.
When aspiring writer Stella takes a book from Sarah's bedroom, the stories in the book begin to be written about them. One by one they start to go missing based on the stories told in the book.
The movie features the most popular stories in the book, with most coming from the first book in the series. Fans of the series will be pleasantly surprised by the movie and the treatment of the original content.
Is this movie the most scary thing in the world? No, it's more of a teen horror with lots of great jumpscares but it never claimed to be the scariest thing you will ever see. Just like the books, the movie played into the hidden horrors that we are all afraid of.
You won't walk out terrified for your life but the movie will please older fans of the books and newer fans that might not know much about them. You'll jump, you'll scream and you'll wish you could go back and read the books again. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a creepy movie you won't want to miss.
