I have loved the podcast Lore since it first came out. Host, writer, and creator Aaron Mahnke perfectly blends horror and folklore to create the most beautiful and terrifying thing you will listen to. He puts so much time, research, and heart into his podcast and you can feel it. When I heard they were making a show based on the podcast for Amazon Video I was excited. The show premiered on the streaming service on Friday the 13th but did it live up to the hype?
The first episode starts with a beautiful animation about a young woman who is buried but isn't actually dead. The art is beautiful and haunting, drawing you into the episode. Mahnke's voice still telling the story like the podcast but it's new a different. Then it cuts to the acting portion and it loses me. I loved the animation and wanted to see the entire story that Mahnke was telling like that. The first episode was a little rough.
By the third or fourth episode I was hooked. The acting started to grow on me and I almost forgot what I was watching. The times when Mahnke would start talking reminded me that it is Lore after all. They are entertaining and at times even a little spooky. It was interesting to see the episode about Robert the Doll and the werewolf episode was my favorite. It was bloody and very well acted.
This show has a surprising number of famous people in it as well. Adam Goldburg (of Friends and Saving Private Ryan fame) is in an episode, so is Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam from True Blood). It's something fun to put on in the background while you do the dishes or clean the house. But that's what a podcast is good for too. Did we actually need this? It is fun to see the stories Mahnke tells being acted out but I would have enjoyed it more if it was animated. The six episodes took no time to watch and they were interesting. The episodes were not consistent though. Sometimes it was all acting with very little animation, sometimes it was a nice 50/50 split. Maybe by next season they will work out all the kinks. If you love the podcast then you will like it. I hope they have more episodes next season as well, I wanted to see more.
