It’s1984 and Diana is saving people and being a hero undercover. Okay not really undercover but no one really knows who Wonder Woman is. After meeting shy Barbara Minerva, and a mysterious stone, Diana has to save the world from wannabe millionaire Max Lord.
Before you read on please know there will be spoilers. You can’t properly review this movie without spoilers.
The concept of the mysterious stone that can grant wishes but messes with your life in the process is as old as time itself and overused. This plot point seems juvenile for a major motion picture like Wonder Woman.
Of course Diana ended up, unknowingly, wishing dead lover Steve back to life. After Diana saves Barbara from a drunk guy Barbara wishes to be more like her. Max Lord gets the stone and wishes to be number one. He ends up being rich and power hungry. Barbara ends up letting the power go to her head and becomes a villain of sorts. Diana ends up weak and unable to really save anyone. Lord figures out that if he consumes the stone he can grant anyone’s wishes by just touching them and has what can only be described as a breakdown.
The real problem with all this is how to get rid of the wishes and put things back to normal. All you have to do is destroy the stone, which is now Max Lord himself, or renounce your wish. That’s it. It could have been solved pretty early on if someone just killed Lord. Diana doesn‘t want him or Barbara killed so instead she has to convince him to renounce everything. Easier said than done...but also super easy if you just mention his son.
Honestly, this movie is a disappointment. The first Wonder Woman was decent and this one falls flat from the beginning. The dialogue is blah, Gal Gadot plays Diana like a robot and the movie takes way too long to get exciting. Once it does get exciting, it quickly goes back to a snooze fest.
I feel bad for Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, and Kristen Wigg because they were pretty good in this dumpster fire but the script, terrible CGI and Gadot’s acting bring them all down. Pascal especially was really good as Max Lord but even his acting can’t save this movie.
The worst part of this movie is the invisible jet and the actual flying Diana learns to do after a conversation with Steve. By the end I was just glad the movie was done so I could move on with my life. Take it from me - don’t bother watching this movie. But if you want to watch this for yourself you can check it out in theaters now (please be safe though) or watch it on HBO Max.
