X: Movie Review

Six friends head out to a remote cabin on the property of an elderly couple to film an adult movie. But the group soon finds themselves having to fit for their lives.
X is a love letter to the 70's horror movies many grew up watching and love. Ti West really captured the 70's aesthetic really well and the soundtrack is pretty killer too (pun intended).
Where X falls flat is with the writing. The dialog is cheesy and not great. While that isn't a movie killer, it does make it hard to really get into the movie. I suspect that a stellar script wasn't really the concern.
The acting isn't the best either. While there are some great moments from Jenna Ortega and Mia Goth, the rest of the cast was just okay. Nothing really spectacular. Goth's character is so quite that most of the movie I forgot she could even talk. Brittany Snow's character gets quite a few lines, as does Kid Cudi, but overall the not great script really hindered the acting.
The death scenes were gory and great but they all seemed to happen too quickly. They were all one right after the other making the last hour of the movie very action packed. It takes a little while to get there but once it does, it pops off quickly.
The main issue with X is that you are almost left wanting something more. It just doesn't itch that spot I wanted. It's also uncomfortable but not in a good way. We don't get much of a back story for any characters so once they start dying you're not really bothered by it. But I suppose that isn't the point.
Since this is a fairly faithful 70's horror porn movie I can overlook a lot of the script and acting issues. But it is 2022. We should be able to watch a faithful 70's movie with what modern audiences would also like. Fans of the classics like Texas Chainsaw will love this because that's who this is made for.
