Christmas time should be changed to celebrate the new Star Wars films. People are more excited about them than a fat old man. The Last Jedi is no exception.
The Last Jedi takes places almost immediately after The Force Awakens. Finn is awake, Rey is still on the island with Luke and Kylo is being yelled at for being beaten by a girl.
Without giving too much away, the gang is still running from the bad guys and Rey is trying to get Luke to leave the island and teach her how to use the force. There is a lot of little things going on as well but that is the jest of it.
There is a lot more wrong with this movie than right. The Last Jedi has a weird tone. It has humor, like most of the Star Wars films do, but this is more like slapstick humor. Star Wars is notorious for having the occasional pun but The Last Jedi should include a laugh track. The jokes are just that: a joke.
There is also a lot of debate about how the force is used. One scene, in particular, is being picked apart by fans for showing a power that is not known to be common with force users. It seems weird and out of place. It left a weird taste in my mouth.
the story also seemed rushed, like director and writer Rian Johnson wanted to get as much action into one movie as possible. It didn't feel like it focused enough on one thing. The casino scene is the perfect example of this. There was so much going on that it was hard to figure out what was happening. The introduction of DJ, played by Benicio Del Toro, was good then his character just disappears. He is never seen again.
Enough about the bad. Let's talk about the good. The Last Jedi is stunning. The cinematography is gorgeous and really helps tell the story better. The big battle toward the end takes place on a planet that is white and beautiful. As the battle takes place you realize the planet is actually red and it is covered in something white. To see the white get whipped up and uncover the red is visually beautiful. It makes the fight scene so much better.
Bottom line: this movie is okay. Most fans will either love it or hate it. I am indifferent to it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. It was just okay. There are a lot of things I would change, the ending being one of them, but it was Star Wars.
